SAL

Self-Alignment Load

The cognitive effort required to identify, structure, and articulate internal states before prompting AI.

Self-Alignment Load (SAL) is the hidden work of translating goals, constraints, and preferences into language the model can use. Before the model responds, the user must already perform alignment labor.

High SAL can make capable models feel unusable even when fluency is strong.
